Zika Virus Facts

  • Spreads to humans primarily through infected mosquitoes.
  • Incubation is 3-12 days
  • Symptoms may include: fever, rash, body aches and red eyes
  • Zika virus infection during pregnancy can lead to birth defects, specifically significant microcephaly (smaller than expected head size and possible brain damage).
  • There is no current vaccine or medical treatment available.
Recommendations for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant:
  • Avoid travel to Zika outbreak areas. To see the areas that are affected, go to the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/zika/index.html
  • If travel is necessary to an affected area, avoid mosquito bites. Use EPA-approved bug spray (safe during pregnancy) and keep all skin covered to the extent possible.

If you have traveled to one of the Zika outbreak areas and are exhibiting symptoms listed above, please call the office for recommendations.
