Women Partners In OB/GYN San Antonio - Menopause

Menopause marks the end of the reproductive years. Menstrual periods stop and other physical and emotional changes may occur. As the ovaries produce less estrogen women often have changes in their menstrual cycle. When estrogen is no longer produced menstrual periods stop.

The most common physical change women experience with menopause is hot flashes. A hot flash is a sudden feeling of heat that spreads through the body to the face. The hot flash may cause sweating and/or a flushed face. Usually the sensation will last from a few seconds to a few minutes. Often hot flashes interfere with sleep causing menopausal women to complain of lack of sleep which can lead to irritability. Hormone therapy can reduce the symptoms of menopause. Please refer to the link below for more information about hormone therapy.

Bone loss increases after the onset of menopause and can cause an increased risk of fracture, so menopausal women should take extra measures to prevent bone loss as described in the section on osteoporosis.
